In the early hours of a frigid winter morning in 2017, off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, John Norman, a seasoned watchkeeper and captain of the fishing vessel Northern Guardian, was scanning the radar for signs of approaching ships when he noticed a faint distress signal blinking on the screen. Without hesitation, Norman sprang into action, alerting his crew and directing the ship toward the coordinates of the distress signal.
Soon, they discovered a small fishing boat battered by the unforgiving waves and on the verge of sinking. The crew of the distressed vessel, caught in a fierce storm, had lost all communication and were struggling to stay afloat. Despite the perilous conditions, Norman and his crew managed to rescue the stranded fishermen. Their actions exemplify the courage and selflessness of watchkeepers.
While Watchkeepers is a fun play on words for a non-profit television station, stories like Norman’s remind us why they are essential. Like the crew of the Northern Guardian, watchkeepers pull alongside Blue Mountain Broadcasting to keep her afloat in the turbulent sea of constantly changing technology.
